Don't say I never did anything. I used this as my project all last week as I was wating on the live-in invalid hand...and...foot. Sigh. Thankfully he had his 2 week check up and is doing fine so has graduated to Das Boot, the huge black Frankensteinish velcro buckled contraption designed to keep his heel lower than his toes. Now he can use the crutches to just swing along so is much more mobile. Good thing since we had to fly to Buffalo for the weekend.
Which, I will say, worked out fine. JetBlue surprised him with it's extra leg room, plus the flight is only a little over an hour, so the fact he couldn't get an exit row (you have to be mobile, duh...) didn't bother him. In the afternoon we met with my dad's lawyer and got some things straightened out and some questions answered. Then, back to the airport to pick up the kids- their flight was about an hour late and my daughter had gotten out of her house in a hurry and had forgotten their funeral clothes- so that meant a quick trip to a store while the guys drank beer and watched the Red Sox, then we ate at a crappy place with bar food. Shoulda known bettah.
Back to the nicer hotel, no more Mildew Motel, for a good night's sleep except for my coughing which the whole corridor had to have heard. Next day first thing we got some Robitussin to keep me under control, but I pretty much felt like a truck had hit me. I managed to get through my little rememberance speech for the 25 or 30 people who came, but between my eyes watering so I couldn't see my notes, and a few real tears too, I was probably just a blabbering idiot up there at the podium. I will never know. There was a small reception, punch and cookies, afterwards and then the 5 of us headed off to the Roycroft Inn for a pretty bad lunch. What a shame, the setting was lovely, the restoration of the buildings complete and beautiful, but THE FOOD SUCKED. I hate to sound like such an East Coast elitist, which is exactly what my dad thought of us anyway, but hey- I can get a better quality of food in a dive here than a 'great' restaurant there. Iceberg? Huh? What a novelty! How about the salad with the canned pear half? I remember in 1955 when this was all the rage, but thankfully some of us have moved on. Another tip, don't ever order crab inland. Why is it we can get fresh Alaskan king crab in Boston any time but they served me canned in the restaurant for about the same price. Not even lump crab, plain old stringy stuff. With CELERY. That capped off the weekend, so I changed out of my fancy $345 silk shirt jacket (Filenes basement for $79, thank you very much) into my tee shirt in the parking lot and flashed a few people who were coming up behind me- just when i thought it was safe! Back to the airport and a trip home- I glanced out the window and realized that I will probably never see Buffalo again.
OK, so that was the weekend, now a bit about the quilt. I don't know if Tortugas have Fandangos but geeze I love those words. I love the turtle nesting stories on the barrier islands around Jupiter so it seems I am drawn to turtles naturally now- this is my third turtle quilt. And, if you follow my stupid ramblings I am also working on a necklace with baby turtles hatching from ping pong balls- it has a few problems yet to be worked out. So for now Turtles R Us. This piece is really a collage of lots of paper, some old quilt remnants, pattern papers, and ink jet printed images of bugs and turtles on white printed linen which give a wonderful shadow-y effect. Then I machine stitched a quilted line around lots of the images- most go through 4 or 5 lasyers to meet any quilt requirements, but I used an old flannel sheet as the batting since I wasn't after any 'puff'. Frankly I like this one a lot because it is collage bordering on quilt rather than my others which were quilts bordering on collage. The addition of paper in the collage itself makes all the difference and I think probably that this is where I will go with the next one. So, tell me what you think about this in the comments section, but please leave your e-mail address and don't check 'anonymous' so I can answer back!
I have an appointment with David tomorrow to get it photographed. He is quiltting the business because of the neurological problems he is having, and we are all worried sick about him. And also what we will do for a reliable great photographer now. Hopefully tomorrow he will have some ideas for us. Time for more Robitussen and a little shut eye.
