Yesterday I went to Michaels to find a whole bunch of bud vases for the centerpieces I'm making, I had good luck and brought home 16 which allows for a few smashing on the road to Key West. Also I bought some art supplies for Hazel so we don't get bored for a nanosecond. I got her some wooden letters to spell her name that we can paint, and some little wooden animal shapes we can glue on afterwards. Got a bunch of brushes and some colored pencils and a sketchbook for her so she can draw Florida as she goes- she makes 'field guides' and I want to be prepared. Anyway, I got a cartload of stuff and wheeled it up to the checkout counter but the lady ahead was having an argument about returning tape so I had to wait. Right next to me were the how-to books and magazines, the usual wire jewelry, fat yarn hats, cookie baking and then I saw the STEAMPUNK book. Yeah, how to make all your stuff steampunky.
And that, my friends, is the death of steampunk. If Michaels has directions it's officially no longer cool.

At the amazing rubber stamp store I went to last week there was a shelf of stamps labeled "Steam Punk." Most of the stamps there were old time clock faces and gears. My thought was similar to yours. If it's now a category of rubber stamps it has somehow lost its cool. Ha ha!
Someone wandered in to Lush Beads down the hall from my studio and was asking for Steam Punk jewelry findings . . . big show coming up and she wanted to make some steampunk pieces to break in to the steampunk market.
Given that I have been taking old pocket watches apart for their useful bits for the last 15 years I asked if she would like to see what I had rolling around in my studio. She took all of the tiny gears and all of the bits that I have had no use for (no did not give her a single pocket watch face) now am just waiting for the flea market to open so I can spend the windfall. . . although what I really, really want are some frozen charlottes (they are wicked expensive though . . . sigh)
