silica department homunculus

"Keep on starting, and the finishing will take care of itself."   Neil Fiore

More snips-from-da-trips:

Really Typical Dutch scenes`
The Orange was out everywhere in celebration of the new King and Queen,  By chance I had a bright orange windbreaker/raincoat that I pretty much had to wear every day and I was cheered and complimented everywhere I went!  If you go to the Netherlands, wear anything you want as long as it's orange.

Crew building a wattle fence of sticks just like they 'imported' to New Amsterdam!

Rooftop scene from the war bunkers around the town
View from the boat early one morning

And some Dutch Oddities~ you know how I loves me some ODDITIES.
One of a big family of screaming peacocks living in the trees at the Het Loo palace.

An ogre bronze statue in a park that little kids weren't scared of but I wouldn't go near!  One of those painted mime guys.  What a way to make a living.

A giant uninhabitable bird condo made entirely of granite scraps.  This was up on a high pedestal and the effect of rock up above was quite unsettling.  This was at the Tulip Garden, Keugenhauf.
But hey, they also had raw herring sandwiches that were quite fine. Who knew...

Two of my favorite pieces in the Rikjsmuseum:
This series of 5 paintings was apparently done by a local artist in Surinam and it's a court painting of local officials showing their rank and position by the batiks they wear.  These are perhaps 8' tall and hung all together are so graphic!  Usually portraits like this were done by the Europeans in their style.  Every detail in their many batiks was perfectly rendered.  These are the things I would have stolen had I been lucky enough to have access with the lights out.  And had a crew to carry them for me.

And here is my favorite European painting, a swan being harassed by a water dog over there in the left corner.  When you looked at this you could see every feather, hear him honking, and feel the splash of the swimming dog (who looked so much like Pepper I got homesick!).  It was mesmerizing.
Nicht Wacht was there too, impressive but this one called to me.

And of course, the towel folding arts...
Today it was a rabbit with a plastic bottle top nose'  There must be a class for this type of thing during maid training, but frankly I prefer my fresh towels folded up and stuck in the bathroom.  But look at me-  I took pictures of them!  Sigh

NOT a Dutch squirrel.

I think cruises are not allowed to leave port unless they can certify that all of the attendants can do at least 10 different towel animals. I still have pictures of towel animals from a cruise I was on in 1990!
