Update
Been gone a long time, eh? Well, I really have been busy doing art stuff for a change. We had our crit group at Carol's the other night and it was good to catch up. Elizabeth Busch was down from Maine for her installation at the Belmont Hill School so she joined us. Carol's peach tree had fruit so she gave us all peaches in champagne, and when a peach tree can bloom and fruit in urban Cambridge it is time to celebrate- not exactly what we usually do at crit. I opted for peaches in sparkling cider because I am STILL on the damn antibiotics.
So, on Wednesday I had offered to help hang the installation with her crew- there were three guys from the maintainence staff at the school and three of us in addition to Elizabeth. There were also three cherry paickers rented because the space for the 12 hangings was 30 feet high- no way in hell was I going up there! My job was basically to crimp the wires and to hold the pieces as the steel rods were threaded through, not exactly brain surgery, plus there was a whole lot of sitting around between the frantic moments I was needed. Believe me I came home sore all over, mostl; from trying to see what was going on up there on the ceiling- I'll call it Sistine Chapel Syndrome. Little did I know the job would spill into today too.
Here are the in-progress and after shots of the 5 pieces hanging in the huge front windows- the glass roof at the bottoms of the shots are the top of the first story just to get you oriented. And the pretty red scissors lift was the one used to hang these pieces. It unfortunately wouldn't go through the doors into the main room so two other lifts were in there that could reach 30'. Here are Mark and Casey, the world's most amazing team, headed to the ceiling to anchor the bolts of the large room:
Here is Elizabeth multitasking, and another shot of the guy in the lift Wayyyy Upppp Therrrrre. These things were so unsteady that they would wave back and forth.
And finally, here is the finished large room with all 7 pieces hanging. The wood band you see at the bottom of the image is the top edge of the partial second floor ceiling. One needs some adjustment but I left before that was finished. The installation is spectacular- it was catching the light and reflecting all over the rooms and ceilings as I was leaving, and it will be simply beautiful in the evenings with the interior lights on. It seemed that this was the entertainment of the day too as all of the administrators and teachers made sure to stop by with their comments.
