Earl Bites the Dust

And even the dust stays dry.

Leading off today with the Whining Dept:
I cannot tell you how BUMMED I am over this fake hurricane.  We were getting warnings all day to evacuate low areas, file footage of waves crashing over houses, all the news people out there on the beaches in their rain slickers, Home Depot overstocked with pallettes of batteries and wind up radios, RedSox CANCELLED last night, and nothing happened!  Not even low winds.  I think it may have rained on the Cape, but geesh.  Now today the sun is blasting and it's perfect 72 degrees and the lines to get over the bridge are backed up to the city.  And NO ONE has invited us to a pool party.  How sad is that?  (Not that we know a soul with a pool up here...)  But it's Labor Day weekend and I want to wear a 'caftan' and 'strappy sandals' and drink a cocktail in somebody's back yard, like in the magazines.  Like we are supposed to do today.  I may have to do the cocktail part on my own, got some good vodka in the freeze

 Knitting Update Dept:
Instead I am fighting my way through some tendonitis from knitting too far into the night.  And I will repeat it tonight and tomorrow too.  I'm making a few Christmas present scarves for some nears n' dears, and putting off working on the GD coat.  I've run out of yarn AGAIN and need to get more for the sleeves but am going to have it sent to FL instead of here so have to wait until I get there.  I am now officially over double the amount called for in the Japanese pattern-  who knew they couldn't count!  Damn thing weighs as much as a large toddler too so it's certainly not a travel jacket.  Live and learn.  Those Japanese have fooled me for the last time and I will not fall for it again.  Maybe.

Now, in the Book Dept:

Am reading a book set in Charleston by Pat Conroy, 'South of Broad'. It's assigned reading in this little book club I joined to keep me reading this summer (and frankly to see some human beans once a month.)  Anyway, I can't give a report yet because I just started it last night (meeting is Thursday and it's 500+ pages long-  am trying to just get halfway!)  The Amazon review was all about how many characters are always crying, weeping, sobbing their way along, so it doesn't sound like something I would have ever picked but hey, this book club has wine and then we eat dinner too.  Who gives a crap about the book?  My kind of club.  I am hoping to get something similar going in Florida this winter to counteract our minds turning to melted Swiss cheese.

And the Ever Popular Food Dept:
Speaking of melted cheese, cookouts, and Florida, my old pal (circa 1968 or so) Susan in lower Californ-ay-ey (like the plethora Beverlys suddenly in my life again, I have several California Susans so she will be Moo Shi Sue from now on)  sent me a joke recipe last night but it's perfect for my first cookout when I get the gas grill cleaned up.  Remember that the turtle is the mascot of our little community?  Well, I am going to serve them:
Ummmm, bacon mats!  Ummmm, turtles!  Ummmm, burgers AND hotdogs.
This simply cannot lose unless I get the wrong beer.
