Comcast arrived within the given time frame today- about 5 minutes before time was up actually, but I was glad to see him. He flipped around and messed with my modem and showed me I can EITHER get online with the regular modem OR with the Airport, a little fact that is not available online from Comcast anywhere (or in fact anything that the 'help lady' told me!). Oh, so I check the Airport docs and there is nothing in there about it either. So- I now have to reset the modem whenever I turn off the Airport or the Airport goes out OR if I try to change preferences.
Sounds like a pain, right, well you don't know the half of it. Seems that once an Airport has been reset that the password reverts to some unknown combination of hieroglyphics and prime numbers, but the name it was given on day one stays with it through lava flows and locust invasions. In short, I cannot get it working with or without the modem. SOOOOoooooo- I am still stealing my internet from some unknown BC Law student in the neighborhood. And thus it will stay until he figures it out and adds a password to his system. I should make some cookies to keep on hand in case he ferrets me out.
Unfortunately it doesn't always allow outgoing mail. But I certainly can't complain. (Which I'm sure you are rolling your eyes at now since it seems I am doing a fine job of it!)
Had a great crit group tonight. I always love the first meeting after a summer where we can barely get three of us together at any one time. We invited another artist to join us tonight to see if she is a good fit and we all liked her energy, though her life seems a bit complicated to join us at this point. We all hope it works out because she started out with fibers and has had a long history exhibiting and teaching so understands our processes and concerns. She has, however, gone beyond into more experimental forms and I find this exciting. I want to pick her brain and get some of her thoughts on how and why and what next! (And broach the subject of whether she knows how to fix my internet!)
One of Linda's neighbors gave her a huge pile of silks from her Asian travels from years ago, said she didn't want to just donate them to Salvation Army since she had collected them so carefully. So we all ended up with yards and yards of gorgeous silks. I grabbed 2 yards of loden green and two of a dark teal charmeuse. Got other misc cuts of pale green with golden dots and a navy and black print and something else I can't remember right now, but LOTS o' SILK STUFF.
And with that, I am leaving town. I've said my bye byes, got the schedule for what's going on around here to aim my visits at, packed up more stuff than humanly possible, and served TY the only eatable food left in the refrigerator. I'm not all mean though, I bought him a new bag of coffee so he'll be fine. Also bought Molly a new bag of food and got her groomed so she smells good again. Funny thing is that she isn't fat like we thought- once all the puffy cottony undercoat came off I have s regular sized dog again, not the 'big boned gal' like we thought!
So tomorrow at this time I will be in Florida hot as hell and hungry. It's an upgrade.

I think you're working too hard here - rather than resetting the airport, try just turning the modem on and off. It should keep all your wireless network settings even if your internet connection wonks out. On my DSL i often have to turn the modem off and on but the airport express picks right up where it was.
Here's my wireless work-around with my Comcast modem: I bought a Netgear wireless router and my Mac laptop picked it up instantly through it's airport connection. The Netgear system works well with the Comcast modem and the Mac doesn't care. The router was about $100 at Radio Shack and is easy to install. Chances are that the signal you're tapping into right now is coming from a router like the Netgear as opposed to an Airport system.
It might be worth a try when you're back north next. That kind of frustration is maddening (ask me how I know!)
